Forget the stage hypnotist that we often think of when ‘hypnosis’ is mentioned. You will be pleased to hear there will be no crazy stuff.
- Hypnosis is simply deep relaxation.
- Whilst in a state of trance/hypnosis the questioning, analytical side of the brain becomes sidetracked. The subconscious part of the brain is able to be more open to new, positive suggestions, enabling confidence and changing negative beliefs you may have about birth.
- Trance is a natural state of the brain to enter into and you cannot be controlled unwillingly by the person who is using hypnosis. Think about daydreaming or being engrossed in a good film or book which is most similar to what we are aiming for.
- By being in a state of trance it helps us to feel distanced from sensations we may be feeling within the body during labour.
Will it work for me?
We all naturally drift in and out of trance daily. For example falling asleep, waking up, daydreaming, reading a good book or being totally absorbed in a film. So there’s no new skill to learn, we will just make your brain work more effectively to benefit you.
Hypnosis or trance is simply a state of deep relaxation in which you remain awake and fully in control. You are always able to respond to something that is happening around you should it be necessary. Think about times when you have been driving and aren’t sure how you got somewhere. Distracted yet fully responding to what was happening.
You and your birth partner will learn simple but incredibly effective relaxation techniques using hypnosis. This will allow you to let go of any worries or fears you may have to help you to prepare for a calm, relaxed and more instinctive, comfortable birth. Practising during pregnancy allows you to become an expert in relaxation by the time of your due date. Your baby can enjoy the benefit of you feeling calm daily whilst still in the womb. Babies born in a calm way can adapt to their new environment more easily. They have also been proven to sleep better, feed better and thrive more quickly.
The techniques learnt are also valuable tools which can be used in every day life when some calm needs to be restored.
